In light of the recent pandemic and the increasing frequency of wildfires, there is growing awareness around the impact of air quality, particularly in indoor environments. Building systems that manage air circulation and ventilation play a crucial role in supporting occupant health and well-being and can help meet indoor air quality credit requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, and Operations and Maintenance rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2. This course provides an overview of indoor air quality (IAQ) and offers strategies for improving it through responsive design and technology.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the importance of protecting building occupants from fine particulate matter, CO2, and VOCs to maintain cognitive function, productivity, and overall health.
  • Explain how enhanced IAQ that meets LEED and WELL requirements can be achieved through centralized, localized, or connected purification systems, helping to ensure occupant well-being and safety.
  • Describe how IAQ sensors and connected systems support LEED and WELL objectives by monitoring CO2, VOCs, and fine particulate matter in real time, enabling quick response to maintain safe levels and reduce the risk of illness.
  • Identify how high-efficiency filters, germicidal UV light, and ionization devices can clean and disinfect indoor air to meet CDC-recommended air change rates and green building program requirements.
