As environmental concerns grow, repurposing materials and finding new ways to showcase their unique qualities in design have become increasingly important. This course examines terrazzo’s history, system types, flooring assemblies, and restoration and refinishing options. Discover its enduring versatility and charm through renovation projects featuring newly installed and renewed vintage floors, where its durability, material attributes, and design potential can help meet credit requirements in the LEED ® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building StandardTM version 2.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall terrazzo’s historical background, components, flooring assemblies, and cracking mitigation strategies.
  • Explain how terrazzo supports LEED goals through its durability and ability to be refinished rather than replaced, reducing demolition waste and embodied carbon.
  • Describe how terrazzo promotes occupant health and wellness due to its low VOC emissions and offers verified sustainability performance through environmental product declarations.
  • Discuss how terrazzo supports inclusive, multisensory, biophilic design strategies aligned with LEED and WELL standards in terms of reducing ambient noise, incorporating wayfinding cues, and enabling organic patterns that promote sensory engagement.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
