Concrete structures often face some of the most challenging environments, where chemical reactions can rapidly cause erosion and reduced service life. This course explores how acid attack, microbially induced corrosion (MIC), and carbonation compromise the structural integrity of concrete. It covers the origins and damaging effects of these processes, such as cracking, spalling, and corrosion. Learners will discover waterproofing strategies that prevent deterioration through performance-based admixtures that combine antimicrobial and crystalline technologies, along with a visual detection system for on-site verification. Designers will be better equipped to specify protective measures that extend the service life of concrete structures, reduce long-term maintenance, and lower the project’s carbon footprint.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the physical characteristics of concrete, such as porosity and permeability, that make it susceptible to chemical deterioration, which negatively impacts its durability and reduces the lifespan of concrete structures.
  • Explain the sources and mechanisms of sulfate attack, MIC, and carbonation and describe how these processes generate sulfuric acid, reduce concrete alkalinity, and interact in a reinforcing deterioration cycle that accelerates cracking, corrosion, and structural damage.
  • Evaluate strategies that mitigate acid attack, microbial corrosion, and water ingress through environmentally friendly admixtures that integrate antimicrobial and crystalline technologies, thereby prolonging the service life of concrete, increasing its durability, and promoting public safety.
  • Explore how a visual detection system provides on-site verification of material integration, providing efficiency in the review process and ensuring safety.
