The demand for mass timber construction has increased significantly in recent years due to its numerous benefits, including sustainability, strength, faster construction times, cost savings, and a natural wood aesthetic. However, a major drawback of mass timber construction is its poor acoustical performance. This course examines the various mass timber construction types and provides acoustical solutions to meet and surpass building codes.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the various types of mass timber construction designed to lower the building sector’s environmental impacts and provide an energy-efficient alternative to traditional materials.
  • Define the various types of sound and how each is treated in mass timber construction to improve sound ratings and the acoustical comfort of the building occupants.
  • Discuss the importance of noise control and the acoustic problems associated with mass timber assemblies.
  • Summarize the solutions and products used to achieve good acoustic design for mass timber construction.
