Asphaltic-rubber membranes play a crucial role in the successful implementation of below-grade foundation waterproofing by forming a monolithic, flexible layer that protects the foundation and supports its long-term structural integrity. Presented is an overview of dampproofing and waterproofing, preparation requirements for foundation design, hydrostatic pressure, and positive- and negative-side waterproofing. Also discussed are the design of below-grade, vertical foundation waterproofing applications and guidelines for proper specifications. The course compares waterproofing membrane technologies and addresses insulation, drainage, and backfill requirements.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall why and when below-grade waterproofing systems are required to safeguard structural integrity and occupant health by preventing moisture intrusion and its related issues, such as deterioration of the foundation and mold growth.
  • Design effective foundation waterproofing systems by addressing excavation, surface preparation, the waterproofing application, and backfilling requirements in the specification.
  • Differentiate between membrane technologies and recall the advantages of an asphaltic-rubber membrane in relation to puncture, water, and UV resistance, seamless adherence to the substrate, long-term durability, and safe application.
  • Explain the insulation, drainage, and backfill requirements for below-grade foundation applications that enhance thermal performance, inhibit condensation and moisture infiltration, and prevent membrane damage, supporting the long-term performance of the structure.
