Embracing Empathy: A Spectrum of Pediatric Behavioral Health Design Strategies for a Continuum of Care

As more purpose-built spaces for mental and behavioral health treatment emerge – whether in one building offering a continuum of care services or in a standalone facility – pediatric environments offer inspiration and insight for behavioral health design best practices. Family engagement, therapeutic spaces, tech-enabled amenities, and specific support for acute mental health crises are factors driving design decisions and gaining recognition for their positive impact. This presentation will explore three pediatric behavioral health spaces and the design decisions that are making a difference.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain why purpose-built pediatric behavioral health facilities are on the rise and how a continuum of services can be supported in one building.
  • Articulate how family engagement in care can support positive outcomes and learn how design informs family centered care in behavioral health settings.
  • Understand how technology is used as a clinical tool to improve patient outcomes and support staff safety in behavioral health settings.
  • Apply design strategies to promote a therapeutic and healing environment for behavioral health patients in emergency settings.
