Carbon Budgeting & Performance-Based Specifications

This course introduces a performance-based approach to reducing embodied carbon in concrete through project-level carbon budgeting. Participants will explore how traditional prescriptive specifications can limit innovation and how alternative approaches can better align material performance, durability, and carbon targets. The course covers key concepts including Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), global warming potential (GWP) measurement, and the role of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and innovative cement types such as Type IL. Real-world case studies are used to demonstrate how project teams can achieve meaningful carbon reductions while maintaining structural performance and long-term service life.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the main drivers of embodied carbon in concrete and interpret EPDs to quantify GWP
  • Compare prescriptive vs performance-based specifications and assess how restrictive clauses limit innovation.
  • Apply carbon budgeting strategies at the project level to balance performance, durability, and carbon targets.
  • Identify appropriate SCMs and innovative cement types (including Type IL) and evaluate placement and long-term performance considerations.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
