Benefiting from Mixed-Mode Ventilation with Operable Skylights, Windows, and Doors

Designers, building users, and managers are increasingly focused on building and occupant health as well as energy conservation. This course explores how mixed-mode (hybrid) ventilation systems address all these issues by improving the ratio of fresh air introduced into buildings while reducing energy needs and costs. It describes the benefits, elements, and workings of these systems and provides design guidance and illustrative case studies.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Assess local climate context to determine the feasibility and nature of mixed-mode ventilation system.
  • Select the correct balance of elements to create the most effective mixed-mode ventilation system.
  • Improve indoor air quality while lowering energy demands and costs.
  • Design ventilation systems that improve the learning performance of students, worker productivity and satisfaction, and personal health and happiness.
  • Select the correct automation system to achieve proper ventilation.
  • Utilize the relevant codes for mixed-mode ventilation.
