Specifying Low-Carbon Precast Concrete

Precast concrete is an economical, dynamic, long-lasting, and easily repairable material for site furniture, planters, planter walls, seat walls, curbing, play sculptures, fire features, wall cap, pool coping, signage, drinking fountains, bollards, and architectural trim. How can these concrete products be specified to limit their carbon footprint?

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify at least three strategies for reducing embodied carbon in precast concrete, including low-carbon cements mixes and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).
  • Evaluate the performance benefits of pozzolans and blended cements in landscape applications.
  • Apply appropriate specification language to ensure low-carbon precast concrete is clearly required in project documents.
  • Anticipate emerging technologies and industry commitments that are shaping the future of sustainable concrete.
