Discuss the meaning of biomimetric design and how it can affect commercial shading solutions for heat, light and glare control.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Discuss application of biomimetic principles in design.
Conceptualize a preliminary design based on the principles of biomimicry. This objective is based on the belief that biomimicry designs that mimic the natural world will promote positive emotional responses and enhance the safety of the occupants. Biomimicry, by its very nature, also falls within the category of supporting environmental and well-being issues.
Define biomimetic design.
Identify the relationship between shading principles and natures solution for heat, light and glare control. Shading principles that mimic natures solution for heat, light & glare control will promote mental well-being of the buildings occupants in the same manner that natural solutions to these issues promote a sense of well-being in nature. Natures shading principles allow for heat, light & glare control while providing occupants with a view of nature and control over their internal environment. This objective also supports AIA's acceptable HSW topic of interior design. Control of heat, light & glare enhance the mental well-being of building occupants and promote positive physical and emotional responses.
