Controlling Legionella and Other Waterborne Pathogens in Healthcare Facilities: Plumbing Design Strategies
Waterborne pathogens in healthcare facilities are a significant source of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) that cause thousands of deaths every year and billions of dollars in direct healthcare costs. This course will familiarize you with waterborne pathogens found in healthcare water systems, the technical standards that manage the risk of outbreaks, and the components of a water management plan (WMP). Finally, we will review the characteristics of plumbing fixtures designed to deter pathogen growth.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Describe how, why, and where waterborne pathogens such as Legionella grow in healthcare water systems.
Identify key risk factors that increase the likelihood of pathogen colonization, growth, and recolonization and describe how plumbing system design can address them.
Recall standards for the management of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens in healthcare facilities and identify which activities fall under the building design professional’s scope of work.
Describe key features of plumbing fixtures designed to reduce the risk of patient infection by waterborne pathogens.
