Specifying Sustainability: Navigating Sustainability Data & Platforms in Support of Specification Requirements
This continuing education unit course provides an in-depth overview of sustainability data sources and platforms, with an emphasis on Program Operator open databases and publicly accessible resource libraries. Participants will explore how these tools support transparent, performance-driven product evaluation and can be leveraged for informed product selection, documentation, risk mitigation, and alignment with design intent. The course also identifies opportunities for manufacturers and specifiers to collaborate through shared sustainability data and product transparency platforms and offers practical strategies for drafting and integrating sustainability-focused specification language that promotes measurable environmental and health outcomes, supports certification goals, and fits seamlessly into project documentation workflows.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Define and overview sustainability data sources and platforms, with a focus on Program Operator open databases & publicly accessible resource libraries, and analyze their role in supporting transparent, performance-driven product evaluation.
Understand how sustainability data & platforms can be leveraged for product selection, documentation, risk mitigation, and coordination with design intent, such as by selecting for attributes aligned to impact categories like human health and climate health as defined by the Common Materials Framework.
Identify opportunities for manufacturers and specifiers to connect as integrated partners through shared and aligned sustainability data sources and product transparency platforms.
Apply strategies to draft and incorporate sustainability-focused specification language that promotes measurable environmental and health outcomes, aligns with certification goals, and ensures seamless incorporation into project documentation workflows.
