The Use of Automatic Entrances, ICU Doors, and Specialty Doors in Healthcare Facilities

The use of automatic entrances and ICU/CCU doors helps solve the problems associated with both circulation and door openings in healthcare design while providing an aesthetically pleasing solution. Healthcare personnel, patients, security personnel, and visitors are constantly rushing and want instant access. Today people are very conscious of touching surfaces and prefer not to have contact with doors. Other issues that need to be addressed during design are movement of patients and equipment, ADA and building code compliance, security, energy conservation, and sustainability.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Review the types of automatic pedestrian doors and ICU/CCU doors used in healthcare. Types of doors include swinging, sliding, and revolving doors.
  • Provide insight into applications of automatic door equipment and ICU/CCU doors. Review healthcare specific solutions.
  • Discuss the applicable building codes and standards, including ANSI/BHMA A156.10, ANSI/BHMAA156.19. and ANSI/BHMA 156.27 automatic door standards.
  • Educate to good healthcare design practice, including requirements for ADA and building code compliance. Review energy efficient, secure, and custom solutions.
