Architectural Metal Panels & Rainscreen Systems: Attachment Planes, Testing, & Design Options

Properly designed and installed rainscreen systems help optimize building envelope performance. This course reviews rainscreen system types, testing, and components, with special attention given to attachment plane considerations that ensure durability and thermal efficiency. Also reviewed are the potential contributions of rainscreen systems to the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2. The wide array of metal panel design options presented here demonstrates the potential to create unique and striking aesthetics across a range of applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the components of a rainscreen system, the different types and testing requirements, and how the system manages moisture to benefit building material longevity, as well as occupant health and comfort as required in WELL v2,
  • Explain the critical role of the attachment plane in a rainscreen system and important considerations to ensure thermal performance that supports energy-efficiency goals such as those in LEED v5
  • List the sustainability benefits provided by rainscreen systems, cladding materials, and responsible manufacturers in terms of durability, material use and sourcing, and manufacturing impact reduction
  • Discuss architectural metal panel options, including materials, finishes, panel effects, and customization, that lend themselves to the design of unique projects that are durable and functional
